Tinyapps with some big features

I recently came across Tinyapps.org this site has got some very useful utilities all of which have a very small footprint, in an age where most applications tend to be bloatware, tinyapps provides great applications that can be put onto a USB thumb drive or onto a floppy if you can still find one that is 😛 .

Two nifty utilities for the Windows desktop

Here are two great applications that have a tiny footprint but perform some very useful tasks. The first one is Process tamer from Donationcoder.com, process tamer automatically changes the priority on applications that tend to freeze windows thus preventing lockups and crashes. The second program is Shadenow which automatically dims the laptop screen after a preset time and thus help you conserve power, while most laptops do have a setting that dims the screen by a preset amount when running on batteries this utility gives you more control on how dim you want your screen plus it can be activated with a hot key.

Crap cleaner

Crap Cleaner is a nifty little tool that enables you to clean out all the junk and temporary files that mysteriously accumulates overtime on your windows PC. Every time you visit a site or  cookies temporary files and installer related files get stored in the temp folder, while there are a variety of tool that boast many optimization techniques the best so far is CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com/. The software is an effort to provide a utility that does just what it says clean crap from your computer at an unbeatable price “FREE”. On a freshly installed computer running windows XP this tool is able to remove as much as 500MB of junk thus making way for your eclectic mix of Mp3’s from various obscure bands and maybe more space for your files.

CCleaner can also fix certain issues with the registry, It can also be setup to run automatically at startup and for the paranoid “tinfoil hat” types can be setup to erase files by shredding them. It also includes an add/remove programs interface using which you can uninstall programs and a startup editor which can be used to prevent programs from starting up automatically when windows starts. Overall this utility is best suited if you don’t want to spend 20-30$ on a swiss “army knife” of a utility that claims to do everything but does not do anything well.Go ahead and give it a try the small download size and the excellent performance will win you over. Nearly 350 million people have downloaded this utility you should too.

Tweaking your internet connection with cablenut

click on image to view actual size

Cablenut is a small windows utility that can be used to tweak some internal register settings (MTU buffers for the nit picky) inside windows to increase the Internet connection speed.

you can download the Cablenut software here, there is an online configurator that can take in values and generate a config file here.or you can just select your type of connection from the cablenut wizard .

warning: Fiddling with the registry might prove to be disastrous if you don’t know what you are doing so be careful. Any thing you choose to do by following this article will be at your own risk.

Optimizing windows XP startup and shutdown

To optimize the way windows starts we need to see how many services are running and disable one’s that are not required a online wizard to do just this is available here.

to remove unnecessary programs from starting up with windows everytime click on start>run>

and in the run dialog type msconfig click on ok.

from the startup tab unckeck all the programs that you don’t need.a huge list of programs that startup automatically is available here consult this to decide if you need a program or not.

next we need to remove unnecessary programs that you don’t use anymore from start>settings> control panel>add remove programs

we also need to remove temporary files, you can use a tool called disk cleanup available from start>programs>system tools>disk cleanup

the above steps should make your computer run at least 10% faster then before

Will post more tweaks in the coming weeks.
